The commercial suckler enterprise at Ballathie largely consists of Limousin x Aberdeen-Angus and Limousin x Simmental cows, with numbers currently totaling 160 and plans to increase to 200 cows. Predominantly the herd sires are Charolais (Balthayock and Ballathie-bred) and Limousin (Elrick) bulls. Cows are out-wintered on straw bedded courts with progeny finished on deadweight contracts for ABP and Scotbeef.
The commercial herd is managed in a similar way to the pedigree herds and health status is maintained at a high standard. A number of high health status females are offered for sale for use as suckler replacements or ET recipient females.
