February 2013: Ballathie herd named best genetically improved Charolais herd in Scotland

The Ballathie Charolais herd has been recognised for making the greatest genetic progress in Scotland during the last 12 months with the Harman Charolais Genetic Improvement Award 2013.

Herd progress was measured by the greatest improvement in the Self Replacing Index (SRI) for the calves born in 2011, and recorded over the 2011/2012 recording years. All Breedplan recording society members with a minimum recorded 10 calves were eligible to enter. During the 12 months, our 30-cow herd SRI has increased from an average SRI +34.5 to SRI +45.8.

We are delighted to take this award for Scotland and see the herd at a stage where it is on the road to success. We attribute that success to having bought in high figured bulls from a proven herd and also having reviewed our females and culled the poorer breeders.

The presentation was made at this month’s Charolais sale in Stirling where Ballathie also sold two bulls in to commercial herds. The first of which, selling at 3800gns was the ET-bred Ballathie Goliath, a Jumper son, out of the Hidalgo daughter Merville. This fully French-bred bull carries a TSI of +41. Next up selling for 3000gns was his full ET-bred brother Ballathie Giggsy.

Ballathie is runner up in the Scottish Charolais Club competition

We were delighted to find out at Stirling in October that we had been given the runner up award in this year’s small herd’s section of the Central and North East Scotland club herd competition.

This year’s competition was judged by Colin Campbell of the Thrunton herd, Northumberland, back in the summer. This is a huge success for Ballathie as the Charolais herd is still in its infancy so we look forward to growing it and having more Charolais cattle out at summer shows and sales.
